This print reproduces a painting by Charles E. Mills showing Benjamin Franklin returning from Europe, though the record dates the image to about 1914 and the scene itself belongs to 1785. Franklin had spent most of the years since 1776 abroad, first as a commissioner in France and later helping negotiate the peace that ended the Revolutionary War, and he arrived back in Philadelphia in September 1785 to a warm reception. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color photochrom reproductions of American scenes, issued the image, which shows how early twentieth-century publishers kept patriotic subjects in circulation. The record is marked as unverified, so details of the painting should be checked against the original.
