Here Benjamin Franklin is shown overseeing the raising of a stockade fort, a scene tied to his work organizing Pennsylvania's defense during the French and Indian War. In 1755, after raids on settlers along the colony's western frontier, Franklin helped raise volunteers and supervised the building of a line of fortified posts to shelter farming families. This print reproduces a painting by Charles E. Mills and was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. The date of about 1909 comes from an old caption card and is an estimate that should be treated with caution.
