Here Franklin appears in his role as a printer, editor, and writer rather than as a statesman or diplomat. The painting is known in this form through a c1914 reproduction, issued under the Detroit Publishing Co. name, of a work by Charles E. Mills. Franklin built his reputation on the *Pennsylvania Gazette* and *Poor Richard's Almanack*, which he produced in Philadelphia from the 1730s, and his writing and printing shaped public debate well before he entered national politics. The record for this reproduction is based on an older caption card and has not been independently verified.
