Abraham Lincoln sits for this 1860 glass negative, the year he was elected president. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made it with the wet collodion process, in which the plate had to be coated, exposed, and developed while still damp. The negative is part of a Civil War collection at the Library of Congress, and its title comes from period caption books, though the photograph predates the war. The number 2394, scratched into the emulsion, is worth noting for researchers tracing the plate.
