This picture belongs to the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States, which was named for Abraham Lincoln when the Lincoln Highway Association was formed in 1913. The route ran roughly 3,400 miles from Times Square in New York to San Francisco, linking towns and cities through a dozen-plus states on roads that were often little more than dirt tracks. Early promoters marked it with painted signs and posts, and the highway became a symbol of the growing American love of automobile travel. The number in the title suggests it is one of several views of the route.
