The Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental automobile road in the United States, stretching from New York City to San Francisco when it was dedicated in 1913, and its concrete markers carried a bronze medallion of Abraham Lincoln so travelers could follow the route across the country. Many of these markers were set up by local boosters and the highway association in the 1910s and 1920s, often at intersections, town squares and county lines. Each one shows how a national road was built piece by piece through local effort, and the Lincoln profile ties a modern motor route to the memory of the president who was assassinated in 1865.
