The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, and someone scratched the year 1985 into its emulsion, so the record's notes are as much a part of its history as the image. Its sleeve labels it as a view of Lincoln's funeral, though that title is unverified, so the exact scene is uncertain. The plate dates to 1865, the year Lincoln was assassinated in April and buried in Springfield, Illinois, after services in Washington and a long train journey west. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the plate, which belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
