The procession that carried Abraham Lincoln's casket through New York on April 25, 1865, is the event this picture records, and it is one of the few Lincoln mourning views taken with a camera on the day itself. Lincoln had been shot at Ford's theater in Washington on April 14 and died the next morning, and his body was carried by train along a route of roughly 1,600 miles to Springfield, Illinois, stopping in major cities so crowds could pay their respects. New York's funeral drew enormous numbers into the streets, and the firm E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., a leading photographic supplier and publisher of the era, issued views like this one for a public eager to keep the moment.
