The funeral car in this view carried Abraham Lincoln's casket through New York City in late April 1865, on the final stretch of a journey that had taken his body across the North. The record dates the scene to April 26, 1865, when the procession was a major public event that drew large crowds to the streets. Because the photograph is dated to about 1879, it was likely made years after the events it shows, and the hand coloring adds tone to a scene that was originally recorded in black and white. It is a useful record of how the nation's mourning was staged in full view of the public.
