The Taj Mahal, the white marble mausoleum at Agra built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, serves here as the frontispiece to Ida Pfeiffer's travel narrative. The engraving was issued in London in 1854, when the English translation of her account of a journey from Vienna through Brazil, Chile, Tahiti, China, India, Persia and Asia Minor reached readers. Pfeiffer, an Austrian traveler who journeyed alone at a time when few women did so, drew wide attention for her firsthand accounts. The subject list also notes boats on the river, a detail that places the monument in its riverside setting.
