The Rossini monument in Pesaro, the subject of this print, honors the composer Gioacchino Rossini, who was born in the city in 1792 and died in Paris in 1868. The statue stands in a public square in his hometown, and the photograph records the sculpture as a civic memorial rather than a portrait of the man himself. Rossini's operas, including The Barber of Seville, made him one of the most famous musicians in Europe, and towns across Italy erected monuments to him in the decades after his death. The record dates the print only to a span between 1890 and 1940, so it likely comes from a period when such memorials were being photographed and sold as views of Italian cities.
