This glass negative is catalogued under the name Selma Kurz, a title the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. The Library of Congress notes that the identification is unverified, so the sitter should be read as a provisional attribution. Kurz (1874–1933) was an Austrian soprano who won fame at the Vienna Court Opera, and her singing drew wide attention in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied press photographs of performers, politicians and news events to newspapers during the early 1900s, so portraits like this one reflect how celebrities were marketed to the public in that period.
