The sitter is the soprano Selma Kurz, an Austrian singer who became one of the best-known lyric voices at the Vienna Court Opera in the early twentieth century. The record gives her name only as unverified data from the Bain News Service, so the date and occasion of the portrait are not known. Bain's New York agency, active from about 1900 to 1932, supplied news and celebrity photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives document many performers who appeared on American stages in those years. The identification rests on the caption information rather than a confirmed source.
