Few places in the Gettysburg record speak as directly to the battle's aftermath as this office of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, photographed in 1863. The Commission was a privately run organization that supplied food, bandages, and other relief to Union soldiers, and it worked in the town after the fighting in early July, when the wounded far outnumbered available care. The negative is a wet collodion glass stereograph, a format that produced paired images for viewing through a stereoscope. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the Civil War photographer, though that attribution is no longer assumed.
