A view of the Sanitary Commission offices in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, offers a rare look at the relief side of the Civil War. The U.S. Sanitary Commission was a private agency with federal approval that supplied medical stores, nurses, and other aid to Union soldiers. After the battle in July 1863, its workers were among the many civilian relief groups who came to a town overwhelmed by thousands of wounded. The picture survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposure and careful handling. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, known for his Gettysburg photographs, but that attribution is now listed as uncertain.
