Amsterdam, New York, sat on the south bank of the Mohawk River in Montgomery County in 1881, when the 1881 bird's-eye view by the firm of H. H. Rowley and C. H. Vogt was drawn. The village had grown up around the river, the Erie Canal, and the rail lines that followed the valley, and its economy rested on carpet and textile manufacturing, with mills turning out wool and carpeting that shipped across the country. Port Jackson, the name given to the riverside and canal district where the mills and warehouses clustered, was the working heart of the community. Residents of the day would have known Amsterdam as a mill town, where the whistles of factory shifts set the rhythm of daily life and where newcomers, many of them from Britain and other parts of Europe, worked the looms and dye houses.
