Taken from Derryfield Park, this 8 x 10 inch glass negative shows Manchester, New Hampshire, a city shaped by the Merrimack River. By the early 1900s Manchester was one of New England's largest textile centers, and its brick mills along the river drove much of the local economy. The Detroit Publishing Company made large-format views like this one of towns and scenery, which were sold as souvenirs and reproduced in travel books and postcards. Dated to about 1908, the picture captures the period when American cities were often pictured as proud centers of industry.
