Indian Rock, on the shore at Narragansett, Rhode Island, sat within the summer resort world that grew up around Narragansett Pier in the decades after the Civil War. The village had been a farming and fishing community, but by the 1870s wealthy families from Providence, New York and Boston were arriving by rail, once a branch line linked the shore to the main railroad at Kingston. Cottages, boarding houses and large hotels rose along the bluffs, and visitors spent their days bathing, strolling the rocky point and watching the surf. The name Indian Rock recalls the Narragansett people who lived along this bay long before the summer visitors came, and that older history sat beneath the new resort life.
