Bristol, Rhode Island, sat on a narrow peninsula between Narragansett Bay and Mount Hope Bay in 1891, and its economy rested on water and factories. The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, founded in the town in 1878, was building sailing yachts and small steam vessels that drew buyers from up and down the coast, while the National India Rubber Company employed many local families in its mills. Bristol's Fourth of July parade, which residents traced back to 1785, was already one of the town's most anticipated civic occasions, drawing crowds to its streets each summer. The view below shows a town of church spires, wharves, and dense residential blocks, the place its own residents would have recognized as home.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Bristol, Rhode Island, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
