Around 1880, the Blackstone River valley of northern Rhode Island was one of the most heavily industrialized stretches in the country, and the mill shown on this river would have been part of that network of cotton and wool works. The valley's industry traced back to 1793, when Samuel Slater set up spinning machinery at Pawtucket, and the river's falls powered mill after mill through towns such as Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Woonsocket. Mill owners drew workers from rural New England and, increasingly, from Ireland, French Canada, and southern and eastern Europe, so mill villages grew into crowded, multilingual communities. Residents of the valley knew the river first as a source of power and jobs, and the rhythm of the mill whistles set the working day for most families living along its banks.
