The Protestant Orphan Asylum on Laguna Street, shown here as one half of a stereograph pair, served children in a San Francisco that was still growing rapidly after the Gold Rush. Its caption card is part of the Gems of California Scenery series, numbered 215, though the card's details are unverified. Orphanages of this era were often run by church-based women's societies that relied on donations and benefit events. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two halves of the pair fuse into a single three-dimensional scene, which was a popular form of home entertainment in the 1860s.
