Few monuments in Alexandria carry a more misleading nickname than the obelisk shown here, which European visitors called Cleopatra's Needle even though the queen had no part in its making. The granite shaft was originally raised at Heliopolis for the pharaoh Thutmose III, more than a thousand years before Cleopatra's reign, and was later moved to Alexandria. David Roberts sketched it during his travels in Egypt in the late 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into this color lithograph for the *Egypt & Nubia* series, issued in London in parts between 1846 and 1849.
