Alexandria, the Mediterranean port that Alexander the Great founded in 332 BC, is the subject of this plate from David Roberts's *Egypt and Nubia*, a multi-volume set of views drawn on the spot during his travels in the late 1830s. Louis Haghe made the colored lithograph from Roberts's sketches, and the London publisher F.G. Moon issued it in parts between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's views helped shape how Europeans pictured Egypt for a generation, and this sheet records a city that was changing quickly under Muhammad Ali's rule.
