Pompey's Pillar, the great granite column that rises above the ruins on the southern edge of Alexandria, is the subject here, drawn by the Scottish painter David Roberts. Roberts made his drawings on the spot during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the publication issued in London by F. G. Moon in parts between 1846 and 1849. Despite its name, the column dates to the Roman period and has nothing to do with Pompey the Great, who was murdered in Egypt in 48 BC and likely never saw it. The plate shows how the monument looked to European travelers of the time, a reminder of the Romantic fascination with Egypt's ancient remains.
