Cook's expedition gave this bay on Kerguelen Island its name because the ships anchored there on Christmas Day, 1776, during the third voyage. William Webber, the expedition's official draftsman, drew the scene, and the plate was engraved for the octavo edition of Cook's published account of the voyage. The engraving shows the cold, barren, rocky coast that sailors found on these subantarctic islands, a landscape far from the holiday its name suggests. It is a useful record of how the expedition's artists tried to show unfamiliar places to readers at home.
