Christmas Sound, in Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America, took its name from the holiday season in December 1774, when Captain James Cook's ships anchored there during his second voyage. The view was drawn from nature by William Hodges, the expedition's landscape painter, and engraved as a double-page plate by B.T. Pouncy and W. Watts for the official account of the voyage. Published in 1777, the plate reflects how Cook's artists documented remote southern waters that few Europeans had charted.
