Looking toward the executive mansion from the east, this stereograph frames the White House alongside the Treasury Building, which stood next to it in Washington. Stereo cards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the flat print a sense of depth. Pairing the two federal buildings in one view shows how closely the President's residence and the nation's financial offices sat together in the late nineteenth century.
