The East Room's neighbor, the East Parlor, is the focus of this view, a smaller formal room on the White House's east side that was used for receiving guests and small gatherings. The photograph dates to about 1903, a period when the executive mansion was being reshaped after the 1902 renovation that restored its interiors and moved the presidential offices into a new building. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs and prints made by Bain's agency in the early 1900s, so it records how the room looked to the public at that moment. Its formal furniture and arrangement offer a useful glimpse of Washington's official décor in the Roosevelt years.
