The East Room is the largest formal space in the White House, and this c1903 view shows it as a room of gilded plasterwork, tall windows and ornate chandeliers, the kind of interior that presidents and their guests passed through for receptions and state occasions. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news and feature pictures taken in Washington and New York in the early twentieth century, and it reflects the period's interest in showing official rooms to the public. Its subject is architectural rather than personal, so the picture is valuable for what it reveals about the decoration and furnishing of the building during the Theodore Roosevelt years, when the mansion was being reworked in ways that prompted wider public attention.
