The name on this picture points to the Godard family, a line of French balloonists who made public ascents in and around Paris during the 19th century. Balloon flights were then a popular spectacle at fairs, celebrations and gardens, and aeronauts such as the Godards drew large crowds by pairing the craft with showmanship and the promise of an unusual view over the city. Ballooning was still new enough that each launch carried a sense of technical risk as well as entertainment. Pictures like this one help show how the sport moved from scientific experiment to a commercial attraction.
