This card takes its name from the balloon L'Espérance, and the French word means "hope," a theme the doves and flowers carry forward. Balloons were a familiar sight in France in the later 1800s, and the 1870-71 siege of Paris made them more than decoration: hundreds of letters left the city by air, and many people sent cards like this one as tokens of goodwill. The printed doves and blossoms suggest peace and renewal, so the card reads as both a celebration of flight and a wish for better times.
