What sets this card apart is its surface: the paper is embossed to look like lace, and the balloon and its passenger were colored by hand rather than printed in flat tones. Decorative paper pieces like this were widely made and exchanged in Europe during the nineteenth century, often used to decorate albums, letters, and greeting cards. Ballooning was closely tied to France, where the Montgolfier brothers launched the first crewed hot-air flight in 1783, so an aerial scene on a French-linked card would have been a fashionable novelty for buyers of the period.
