Fenway Park opened in 1912 as the home of the Boston Red Sox, and this view of its exterior is one of the few surviving glimpses of the ballpark in its first years. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the photo service that supplied New York and national newspapers with news pictures in the early 1900s. Its date of about 1914 was assigned by baseball historians at the Society for American Baseball Research, since the original caption card is not fully reliable. Worth noticing is how the building's street-facing facade looks modest beside the large crowds that filled the park during the Red Sox's championship years.
