Fenway Park is shown here from the outside rather than from the diamond, which makes it a useful record of the ballpark's surroundings. The Boston Red Sox opened the park in 1912 on the marshy Fenway area, and by the mid-1910s it was a fixture of the city's neighborhoods. This glass negative is dated to about 1914 based on research by the Society for American Baseball Research, and it belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs document American life in the early twentieth century. Look at the street and the people around the ballpark for a sense of how the stadium fit into everyday city life.
