Rochester in 1896 was a city of more than 130,000 people, and the photographic business George Eastman had built since the late 1880s was becoming its best-known product. The Eastman Kodak Company, formed in 1892, made cameras and sensitized film in factories near the downtown, and its simple box camera had put amateur snapshots into households far beyond New York. Other employers still relied on the river and the railroads, with New York Central tracks running through the valley to carry goods east and west. Civic life during these years also turned toward public green space, as Frederick Law Olmsted's park plans shaped the city's grounds and drives.
