Watkins Glen, at the southern end of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York, was a small village in 1896 whose fortunes rested on a few steady sources. The gorge that gave the town its name had become a popular resort, drawing summer visitors who rode the railroad up from the cities to walk its stone stairways and waterfalls. Seneca Lake itself carried lumber, grain, and freight, and the lakefront and rail lines tied the village to larger markets to the north and south. William Herman Rau, a Philadelphia photographer known for his views of the region's landscapes and towns, made panoramic images like this one to show the lake and its shoreline to residents and to the tourists who came to see them.
