Hemlock Lake, in Livingston County in western New York, sat in the hills south of Rochester in 1896, a long, deep lake surrounded by farms and woods. Since the 1870s it had served as the source of Rochester's drinking water, carried to the city through a long aqueduct, so the lake was a working reservoir for a city then growing on flour milling, nurseries, and manufacturing. Rochester residents knew the lake mainly as the origin of their tap water, and the district around it remained largely rural. This view records a quiet shoreline at a time when the Genesee valley's industrial growth depended on that supply.
