Lilies, the traditional flower of Easter, frame the woman in this 1896 color lithograph advertising *The New York Times*, and the wording makes the poster's aim clear: the paper presented itself as a model of decent and dignified journalism. Printed in New York by Lieber & Maass and credited to the artist De Yongh, it was a promotional poster meant to persuade readers to bring the paper into their homes. In the 1890s, newspapers competed hard for respectable family readers, and pairing women with seasonal symbols was a common way to suggest that a publication belonged in the parlor as well as the office.
