Two carved faces, one smiling and one wearing a monocle, give this New York view its character. Mascarons are ornamental masks set into stone or terracotta on building fronts, and the "reader" theme suggests figures tied to books and learning, a playful twist on the classical heads common on Beaux-Arts and early twentieth-century commercial buildings. The sprinkler alarm beside them is a reminder that such street-level ornament often survives on buildings adapted for modern fire safety. The contrast between the old carving and the newer hardware is worth a close look.
