Few houses in Georgetown have a closer link to American song than the Key Mansion, the brick residence associated with Francis Scott Key, who wrote the poem that became "The Star-Spangled Banner" in 1814. This view survives as a pair of 8 by 10 inch glass negatives made around 1908 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled the country photographing scenic and historic sites for travel books and postcards. The two plates are nearly identical, so they show the house from almost the same spot. The mansion's Federal-style brickwork and symmetrical facade reflect the taste of the early republic's prosperous families.
