The picture shows Duddington, the Carroll family residence at F and 2nd Streets S.E. on Capitol Hill, a house that stood on the edge of the young capital's growing street grid. The Carroll family held land in this part of the District from the earliest days of the federal city, and Daniel Carroll of Duddington, a Maryland planter who signed the Constitution, is among the family members tied to the estate. The photograph dates from about 1880, when the house was surrounded by the rowhouses and new streets of a rapidly changing neighborhood. This print is a later reproduction, made in the 1970s from that earlier photograph, and it preserves a record of a mansion that once stood in marked contrast to its surroundings.
