Taken from the Capitol around 1863, this albumen print looks northwest across a city still finding its shape during the Civil War. The record names several landmarks in view, including the Patent Office, Trinity Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church and City Hall, so the scene reads as a survey of the downtown skyline rather than a single building. Washington in these years was swollen by wartime government work and troop movements, and the rooftops and church spires in such views show a capital whose growth had outpaced its streets. Albumen prints of this kind were the standard medium of their day, and their fine tonal detail is worth a close look.
