A donkey cart on Barbados, the eastern-most island of the Lesser Antilles, is the subject of this print, which dates to about 1940. Carts like this one were a common sight on the island's roads, hauling cane, produce and goods between fields, markets and villages in an economy still shaped by sugar. The photograph came from the papers of Waldo Gifford Leland, an American archivist who led the American Council of Learned Societies and whose files reached the Library of Congress, so it reflects the outside eye of a visitor recording everyday island life during the decades before independence.
