Here the subject is a specific step in rubber making: the tapper's latex is poured over a wooden paddle or mold and held over a smoky fire, which hardened the milky sap into a dark, durable layer. The method was common across the Amazon basin during the rubber boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when Brazil supplied most of the world's rubber. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, made by a travel writer and photographer who documented daily life and industry in many countries. Its record dates it only to a span between about 1890 and 1923, so it captures the boom era rather than a single moment.
