Hell's Half Acre is a valley in Yellowstone National Park, and this view shows its broad, open floor as it looked to visitors around 1892. The print was made by the W.H. Jackson Photographic Company, whose founder had documented the park's geysers, hot springs, and canyons since the early 1870s, when Congress set Yellowstone aside as the first national park in 1872. Mounting the albumen print on linen made it sturdier for sale and handling, a practice common among photographers who sold scenic views to tourists. The picture belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company collection, which later acquired and marketed Jackson's negatives.
