Liberty Cap, the tall travertine cone at Mammoth Hot Springs, is the landmark this stereograph singles out from Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 western tour. The card's subjects also note horseback riding, a common way to see the park at the time. Published by the American Stereoscopic Company in New York around 1903, it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave formations like this one a three-dimensional look in the parlor. Its copyright credit to R.Y. Young points to the commercial photography trade that supplied such views to American households.
