Few things in Yellowstone drew tourists like the animals that wandered near the roads and hotels, and this stereograph card captures one of them in the park's natural history series. Issued around 1903 by the American Stereoscopic Company of New York, the card was meant to be viewed through a hand stereoscope, where its twin images merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Stereoviews like this were a popular form of home entertainment in the early 1900s, and they carried scenic and wildlife images of distant places to parlors across the country. Yellowstone, established in 1872 as the first national park, was a favorite subject for such cards.
