A snowy winter scene of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., gives this 1926 photoprint a quieter character than the building's usual ceremonial views. Underwood & Underwood, a firm long known for stereographs and mass-produced news and travel photographs, made many views of the national capital for popular audiences. The Capitol, completed in its current form in the 1860s under its dome-era design, was then a daily workplace for Congress as well as a symbol of the republic. Pictures like this one, showing the grounds softened by snow, were often sold as souvenirs and teaching images of American landmarks.
