Snow dusts the great cast-iron dome of the Capitol in this winter view, with a streetcar and a monument standing in the foreground of the scene. Washington's streetcars ran along the avenues around the Capitol grounds for decades, so the picture captures a working city as much as a national symbol. The dome, completed during the Civil War years and topped by the Statue of Freedom, has long been the most recognizable silhouette in the capital.
