Maureen O'Sullivan (1911–1998) was an Irish-born actress whose career spanned stage and screen from the early 1930s, and this 1950s portrait comes from the Ashley Famous Agency, a talent agency whose publicity stills circulated widely among studios, newspapers and magazines. O'Sullivan was best known for playing Jane opposite Johnny Weissmuller in the Tarzan films of the 1930s and 1940s, a role that made her one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces. By the 1950s she had moved into more varied work on stage and television, and agency portraits like this one were used to keep working actors in front of casting directors and editors. The record gives no photographer's name, so the print's exact studio origin is uncertain.
